IT IS THE YEAR of the Council of Nicea, 325AD of the Christian era in the Roman Empire: a particular year in an epoch of profound political and religious upheaval. In Angelos, a young warrior-monk of the Eclectic Order is assigned a mission to carry beyond the Imperial frontier a mysterious document that is believed to have been written by one of the great masters of the Order. Who wants to conceal Yehoshua’s message of the young warrior of the Eclectic Brotherhood? The nascent Church, Emperor Constantine, or both, as they had "written" and imposed the History of the State Religion? Angelos is that of a flight across the Empire, a pilgrimage of faith or an inner journey? Will the young man find the answer at the end of his journey?

TODAY, I visited one of my favorite sites about Lisbon, and it is a site that I often find myself returning to to see the latest articles. It is a site that I have to share with you all.

In Love with Lisbon (inlovewithlisbon.com) is a wonderful blog kept by Lily and written in English, and as you can see in the title, it is about the Portuguese capital city, Lisbon. It is still being updated with new articles and has been on the web now for the past three and a half years.

The author's enthusiasm is obvious, and passion for the city oozes out of her thoughtful writing on diverse topics from Lisbonian culture, gastronomy, literature, city events and travel.

Portuguese language tips feature as well as beautifully compiled video lessons (the videos can also be found on YouTube). Even astrology has a presence. The site is a joy, instilling a heartfelt warmth into its readers that is so inviting.

In love with Lisbon fills the space as both culture and travel guide, but it is more than this, it is a touching and personalized account of Lily’s relationship with Lisbon and the Portuguese language.

The essence of the site cannot be put more aptly than as Lily puts it, “I fell in love with the beautiful city of Lisbon: the smell of good coffee, the breeze from the river, the mosaic streets, the sound of fado, the music of the language and the soul of Portugal. Join me on my journey and always follow your heart.” This is a sentiment I share well. I have myself had and continue to have my own Portuguese affaire de cœur that began in 1996 at the age of fifteen, and became fully manifest at the age of twenty-three in 2004.

In 1996, as a young boy, I was visiting Lisbon and the Algarve with my family. Despite its popularity, the Algarve never quite filled me with wonder and curiosity on a par with Lisbon. In 2004, my memory of the city was reawakened through a trip to Lisbon with friends from university. The city was richly filled with the intriguing marine symbolism of exploration and other hints to the Portuguese story. The streets were black and white cobbled pieces of art of basalt and limestone, known as calçadas. The air of the cidade branca (the ‘white city’ as the Lisbonians like to call their city) was infused with a great history. It was and is charming old and beautiful. From 2004, I committed myself to learning Portuguese, and have loved the language since.

Perhaps In Love with Lisbon will encourage you to fall in love with Lisbon, and embark upon your own affair with this delightful place.

Romanicist polls (results): The new title for this journal is 'The Romanicist'. Do you think this title is well-suited for a Romance language and culture site?

HERE IS the publication of the results for the question polled above that closed 30 July 2010.

Several months ago Románia Contínua (the previous title of the site) posed this question in order to glean from our readers opinion on the site’s title. Suggestions were made by readers that Románia Contínua was confusing, and few seemed to realize its significance. Many thought the site was about the eastern European country of Romania, but, in fact, Romania Continua is a Latin term used by Romance linguists which loosely means ‘continuing Romania’ – Romania being the lands of every nation where a Romance language is spoken. Because of the confusion it was decided that a name change was in order.

We needed a simple title that would convey everything on what this site is about; Romance languages, the culture of the Latin/Romance world, Romanceness.

The Romanicist or Romanist gives little doubt of the subject matter/intention of the site. There were other options, such as Latin World, etc. but 'Latin' often gives the impression of something to do with South America. Romanicist was chosen over Romanist because of the historical pejorative connotations in English, and it may be confused with Church matters or matters of Rome and the Romans. 'Romanic' clearly indicates Romance/Romanic linguistics and matters.

Nine votes is hardly a striking endorsement from our readers what title they would prefer to see on the site, but it’s a start.
